Why birds sing

"Mate with me, I am fit."
"Stay out of my territory, or else."
"I am here; where are you?"
"I am a Robin."
"I am hungry."
"Ah ha, here is food."
"Look out: danger in the air."
"Look out: danger by land."

Such talk is a simplified translation of bird communication, like program notes for an avian chorus. Humans may never truly understand what birds' say, but the attempt brings pleasure and insights into animal behavior. Along with humans, dolphins, whales and a few other animal groups, birds communicate vocally.
